The Race to Save the Lord God Bird by Phillip Hoose
I worked for the Forest Service for 10 years and had no idea that clear cutting a forest could wipe out a species of bird. I was very young then and I'm sure couldn't have cared less. I'm amazed though that cutting down one swampy forest was all it took to kill off the last of the ivory billed woodpeckers. Since this book came out, there have supposedly been sightings in Louisiana of this bird. In the '40's the bird had a hard time reproducing. I'm certain that if there are any still alive today it is only because they found a very remote area to nest in.

The Witch's Boy by Michael Gruber
What a great book! This has now made it to my sparce list of favorite books. The author has a mastery of wording that is truly wordsmithing. He weaves fairy tales into the story in such a way that you don't realize you are reading the Cinderella story or Rumplestilskin until you're almost finished with it. There are many more fairy tales in this book too. I wasn't sure how the author would end this book without ruining it. The ending is enchanting just like a fairy tale. The size (377 pages) is a little overwhelming to some but it reads fast. One of my favorites of this year and of all time!

Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
This book was long. The author did not do a very good job thinking things through. For instance, all the uglies have to be turned into pretties; doctors preform the surgery and within a week uglies are pretties and are all healed up, etc. Not very believable.

The Mammy by Brendan O'Carroll
Funny book. Too many f-words but very funny content. Makes me want to visit Ireland again. Pinpoints the people spot on.

Ruby Holler by Sharon Creech
I liked this book but it is definately for kids around the ages of 8 to 12. Sharon Creech has written much better books. This is about a pair of twin orphans who get tossed back and forth to different foster homes and their antics with the last foster home they are sent too.
