The Race to Save the Lord God Bird by Phillip Hoose
I worked for the Forest Service for 10 years and had no idea that clear cutting a forest could wipe out a species of bird. I was very young then and I'm sure couldn't have cared less. I'm amazed though that cutting down one swampy forest was all it took to kill off the last of the ivory billed woodpeckers. Since this book came out, there have supposedly been sightings in Louisiana of this bird. In the '40's the bird had a hard time reproducing. I'm certain that if there are any still alive today it is only because they found a very remote area to nest in.
